Independent lesbian & gay magazines and newspapers have existed since the late 1960s. The Stonewall Riots of New York City began a revolution in gay information outlets and a need for true and accurate reporting of social and political issues facing the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities. Many of the glbt publications below have grown from basement operations of paper and wax in the 1970s & 1980s, to real offices using desktop publishing in the 1990s, and are now using the internet and web to reach even more people in the new Century.

Sadly, many gay magazines and newspapers have folded over the years due to a number of challenges -- conservative backlash, loss of leadership to burnout or AIDS, lack of community financial support, an emergence of mainstream competition, migration of readership to disparate locations, a shift to new media.... But the local gay publications below continue to publish regularly in spite of these many changes, because they know that their services and their voices serve to unify the glbt community in a way that no other resource can.

Copies may be free to pick up at your local bustop, bookstore, restaurant or nightclub; but costs for printing, production, staff, rent, and distribution increase year after year.
